But “living simply” is actually a crap ton of work, and I just don’t have that much time to dedicate to figuring it out.
My version of simple living involves streamlining my business, cutting down on clutter, and doing meal prep for the week. The biggest thing I’ve done to help simplify things was selling Indie Gift Box so that I now only have one business to manage. It’s a world of difference, let me tell you! I only feel like I’m going crazy half the time now, instead of all the time!
I’m also really digging Streak for knowing where I’m at with administrative tasks for my projects. I always have trouble remembering who I’ve quoted and what stage of the project we’re at. I can’t really use Streak for project tasks because each project is so different, but I can use it to keep track of the different administrative stages so I know who I’m waiting on a response from and what quotes I’ve sent out. I also LOVE how it organizes all the emails and files together. It makes my life a million times easier!
Since we’re moving anyhow, I’ve been getting rid of stuff like a madwoman. Throwing out/donating stuff is one of my very favorite things in the world to do. I LOVE getting rid of stuff. It’s like a drug to me. Sometimes I go overboard and get rid of things we need though. Oops.
Anyhow, one of the things that I’m trying to work on is cutting back on my wardrobe while at the same time curating a better capsule wardrobe so that I don’t have random items that only go with one other thing in my closet. I’ve cut my shoes down by more than half, cleared out all but two “office” outfits (I only kept those in case I meet clients in person), and gotten rid of anything that I don’t actually like. It’s amazing how much clothing you can accumulate that you don’t even like.
I’ve been pinning as much as my wardrobe as possible in the past year so that I can easily see what I have and get a better idea of what I need. I still have things that AREN’T on that board since some stuff is much older than my Pinterest account, but it’s still pretty helpful.
I really just want to own everything in my Handmade Wardrobe Project, but sadly, I am not rich. Instead, I own way too much from American Eagle because they have really good sales and pretty good quality clothing. No, they didn’t pay me to say that. It’s probably sad and kind of embarrassing how much I own from AE as a 27-year-old adult.
One of the best decisions I’ve made has got to be doing my food prep for the week. Basically, I cook a bunch of chicken on Sunday and then just use it throughout the week. It makes putting dinner together take only about 15 minutes most nights. Sure, we don’t eat a huge variety of food, but we didn’t eat a huge variety when I was actually cooking it from scratch every night either. Now I just toss some chicken with some veggies and make a stir fry, or throw it in a salad, or do something with it and noodles. It’s not very exciting, but it works for us.
My goal over the next month is to really de-clutter hardcore. Everything from my house to my clothing to my hard drive. I just spent a few hours going through files on my computer and deleting stuff I don’t use. I’ve also been unsubscribing from newsletters like crazy so help de-clutter my inbox, and it’s awesome to only get about 50 emails a day instead of 150. Yeah, might still need to work on that one.
Have you done anything recently to simplify or de-clutter your life?
